Dick Collins Firetrails 50 Miler race report.

Image
Photo credit: Esther Searcy (@esthersearcyphoto). It was my first 50 miler and I was in the restroom when the race started. I was one minute behind the pack and because of the distance, I was okay with it. I was feeling strong, I ran at a steady pace (no walking) while it was cooler, after clearing the initial single-track congestion. After the aid station at the halfway point (out and back), my glutes and legs were feeling heavy, so I started walking and running from that point on. At mile 36, my self-talk was about keeping my feet moving and finishing my first 50 miler. Mentally I was in a good place because I was confident that if I kept my legs moving, I would be able to finish. After 40 miles the toughest sections of the course were the downhills. My right leg below the quad felt weaker than my left, so I paid close attention to my stride mechanics from that point on. It got hot from mile 30. I was using evaporative cooling techniques at each aid station by ...

Trail running - mental resilience.

Image
One of the traits my mentor Fred Zalokar (RIP) demonstrated to me was being mentally resilient. In the mountains, I've learned to have a warrior mentality, and my mission is to meet any challenge with the confidence that I will prevail. Because I learned this trait two decades ago, it’s part of my natural being. The only way I know to strengthen this trait is to follow through in training/races. For example; if I plan a 20-mile run then I have an obligation to myself to complete the distance. If it's an ultra event, I'll do everything in my power to finish. If I were to get in the habit of modifying my runs because it becomes more difficult than anticipated, then I will weaken my resolve when a true test arises.  Enjoy the journey, and fight to stay active. ⛰🏃🏻🐐

Simple running and hiking tips to stay cool while enjoying the mountains. ⛰️⛰️⛰️

Image
If you spend a lot of time on mountain trails as I do, you are probably aware that it's getting warmer. It's important to think about how you are going to stay hydrated and cooler before you start your run or hike. If there are water sources available, an excellent accessory is a filtered water bottle. In many cases, if you are sure of active water sources on your chosen route, you don't have to be extreme about carrying your own hydration. Which can help in the amount of energy you expend, and the more you carry the more difficult it can be to keep your body temperature in the normal range. I do recommend always packing some water on your person. If there are water sources available I like to use the water I packed last. I like to pack some electrolyte supplements or pack electrolyte drinks. I prefer to pack water and have electrolyte tabs for the versatility of hydration and cooling. As a runner, my natural instinct is the less I carry, the better, so I can utilize the ...

Let's move.

Image
While I was running, it occurred to me that what all humans do best is move their bodies. We all move in different ways, and in some ways the more we move the more fun we can have throughout our lives. An example in my life. Because I've been running at least one mile a day for over 14 1/2 years. I can eat that piece of pie. Why, because I run and by running I burn calories. I love to run, and I like pie. So in my life, the more I run, the more I can enjoy the simpler things in life. That's right. That piece of pie. Sure it's important that I eat a healthy balanced diet. If I run daily, how strict do I have to be? That's the question.  Let's move!

The power of thought and the achievement of your fitness goals.

Image
It was brought to my attention that I have not shared the mental side of getting and staying fit. I learned the concept that thoughts are things decades ago. What you consistently think about both consciously and subconsciously determines your eventual accomplishments. What I enjoy about running goals, is the speed in which you can achieve your goals. It’s 💯 percent up to you. You don’t have to persuade stakeholders (which may take time), like you do when accomplishing your professional goals. If you want to increase your mileage. You start by running a little bit farther on your current runs. If you want to run faster, you start training faster. Here are seven of my goal setting rules. 1. In the beginning don’t share your new goals with people that can’t help you accomplish them. Share your goals with like minded individuals (only) that will joyfully help you on your journey. An example would be current training partners. 2. Think about your new goal often. 3. Increase your goal in s...

Is fitness your best insurance policy?

Image
Kevin Brunson @ Reno UFC Gym On June 8 th , 2021, the Reno Gazette Journal published an online article for subscribers only about my 5,000 th daily running streak milestone which occurred on June 13, 20201. The benefit of the article is I feel like it’s been a coming out moment for me and it has blessed me with the opportunity to share my fitness philosophy. I have a similar story of many runners I have had the privilege to run with in the Greater Reno Nevada running community. I was recruited for the Swope junior high school after doing well in the mandatory one mile run for physical education class. I started running in 5 th grade for two reasons. One my mouth often wrote checks my body couldn’t cash. Thus, I was always the smallest boy in my class until about 10 th grade. Even then I was painfully thin, so I was no match for some of the larger boys. Secondly a friends dad told me the best way to become a better downhill snow skier was to run. I was excited to run cros...

What is collision coverage?

Image
What is collision coverage? Collision coverage helps pay for the cost of repairs to your vehicle if it's hit by another vehicle. It may also help with the cost of repairs if you hit another vehicle or object. That means you can use it whether you're at fault or not. Unlike some coverages, you don't select a limit for collision. The most it will pay is based on the actual cash value of your vehicle. You will be responsible for paying your selected deductible. If you are driving and impact a tree, pole, building, vehicle this type of accident is considered a collision, and thus your collision deductible is important. The larger the deductible the less expensive, however, if you rarely have that amount on hand, it may be better to pay extra for a lower deductible. If an accident happens, you want to be able to fix your vehicle as soon as possible. The best way for this to happen if you can afford the deductible. After you discuss your collision with your independent insu...

Why purchase your insurance from an Independent Insurance agent? Discover what happens when you place a claim.

Image
To us, the primary reason to utilize an independent agent is to be able to discuss claims, without placing a claim. In many circumstances IF you don't have a dedicated independent insurance agent, they can give you advice with out legally having to place a claim. Like most direct insurance company relationships (notice when you call these companies), you are normally talking with a different person, each time you call. When you have a dedicated independent insurance agent on your side, you don't have these limitations. Always remember that the reason you buy an insurance policy is because you may have to place a claim. Because of this fact, you may want to buy from an independent insurance agent.
